Experienced tower hands and strong leaders in the tower industry are very much in demand. However, there are many very capable but green tower hands that need the patience and experience of good employers to help them grow into a valuable employee.
When someone commits the time, energy and expense that it takes to get professionally certified as an authorized climber, certified climber, or any other certification, that’s a strong indication to that person’s commitment and work ethic. They’ll come out of these trainings knowing the basics, armed with information to assure safety when working at a tower site. These certifications are also structured to assure meaningful, well-remembered lessons and make the student a valuable member of the tower team once they get their certification. But then what?
That’s where employer training needs to come into play. It takes a lot of time and patience to train green tower hands, but the investment is well worth it for those who do. One of my favorite sayings about training is illustrated here:
Question: “What happens if we invest all this training into an employee and they leave?”
Answer: “What if we don’t and they stay?”
So many employers want a readymade employee delivered to them; ready to climb towers and take on very challenging and complex situations. Even with the best Tower Safety and Instruction in the industry, don’t you want to ensure that you personally can vouch for that person’s expertise and training? The only way to do that is through employer training.
Are you an employer in the tower industry that’s dedicated to taking on new tower hands and turning them into the professional that any employer would want? We’d love to hear from you! Tell us about your successes in investing in young talent and how your company benefited.
